Transmission mount or rear mount

Given that most of the rear mounts are close to 40 years old and the rubber is probably separated or broken like mine.� Has anyone had any success repairing or modifying?� A friend suggested modifying to use donut style mounts similar to the sub frame mounts.� Any thoughts?

I was thinking about this very thing just a few hours ago. I am considering looking into pouring cold cast rubber into the contained area.
My centre section is still holding it's position..... just.
It is possible to purchase various shore hardnesses of the cold cast type & it bonds very strongly to prepared steel surfaces.

Hi Paul,
I modified a rear mount using a fast drying, urethane casting product called DEVCON FLEXANE 80, it's available in 1 lb portions in both liquid and putty versions.
I removed the all the loose rubber, cleaned all the metal parts, wrapped some plastic sheeting around the mount then poured in the liquid while propping the bracket with four holes in a centered, vertical position. It is much stiffer than the original mount, but still maintains some flexibility.
It works well for me.

Hi John, that is a clever way to fix it.
Where do you get the Devcon?
80 is probably the durometer of the hardened material.
Maybe they make a different hardness?
I was also thinking that it might work on my gear shift linkage in the car. The rubber bushing is hard and cracked.

Hi,
I ordered it on-line, I believe it was about $40. DEVCON makes two
different versions. _*FLEXANE 80:* _ Shore A, 87 durometer and _*FLEXANE
94:*_ Shore A, 97 durometer.
I did a quick search on the web and came up with this source, but I am
sure I've seen it in hardware stores.

I am not dealing with this question now but I know I will need to at some point. I imagined I would replace the original rubber with windshield urethane. Pretty tough stuff but maybe too stiff when set.

Hi Blake, Devcon products are expensive in UK. Windshield urethane may be worth considering as an economic alternative, although Devcon 80 & 94 are made for such a job !
