Just need to understand the question, because the check valve sits in the spring. It can go in upside down I guess but then the spring would be upside down otherwise the cap couldn't be threaded in place. If you mean the rear check valve is where the front check valve is then there may be some fluid flow issues but other than that not much.

Looking at the two check valves, one of them seals completely against the rubber washer. The other check valve has a small manufactured imperfection where it seals that looks like it allows controlled reverse flow. I don't have the experience of seeing lots of these, but I would guess that you want the one that seals completely against the rubber washer to be used on the rear drum brakes which need a small amount of residual pressure when the brakes are released. I'll put up a photo of the two check valves... Last I checked a few months ago, you could still get new front check valves
