attempting to adjust the valve clearances

Post by mterrens »

I am attempting to solve my "nasty rattle" by checking and adjusting the valve clearances.   Here is "where I am at" with it.  If anyone has any ideas about it all, please write!

Hi Steven;
    The one on your right is new, the one on your left is warn.  The warn rocker has a flattened center area and will click.  Two things can be done, replace with a new one or have your old one hard chromed enough to replace the warn area and reground.

Bill,
The new one in your picture appears to have a "chromed spot".  Is this how they are built?  Is there a measurement that can be taken to see if a rocker has worn down past the limit, or is it a visual thing?

Hi Steven;
    There is a measurement, it is applied to the amount of wear on both ends.  I told the shop that hard chromed the rocker arm to build it up and give it an additional .005 past what they felt was the original measure on the finished product.  With that information they have always worked.  Knowing that both ends wear, I wanted to make sure they would still adjust when put back on the engine.  I have had some that had to be rechromed because they were to low.
