sparkplug wires

hi well i'm waiting for my z600 to be delivered. i know that the insulation is off the spark plug wires. question: can the wires be replaced or the insulation restored and how? thanks wish me luck. dean

An easy, clean, and waterproof install could be done by using NGK Plug
Wire Splices, but you must ensure that you have at least an inch of
good wire extending from the coil body. Simply install your coil wire
end into this unit and tighten, do the same with your new plug wire.
An advantage of these is that you could use any available 7mm spark
plug wire or cap combination.
I have also seen the old wires dug out of the coil and new ones glued
in, but I can't vouch for the reliability or durability of that

I pulled the wires out of my original coil as they were unusable. I chipped a little bit of the epoxy away to pull the wires. It didn't take much. I found that in the coil is a lance that is specifically made to go into the wire. The lance appears to be a stainless steel needle. It's very durable.
I bought some new 7mm wire and cut them to length and then installed them in the coil. They fit real good and I made sure that the wires were pushed all the way in. I never even glued them. I just pushed them in there. I've been running with those wires for over two years. No problems with them at all.

Hi Martin,
    The motorcycle coils will work.  Accel has some and you can find some other coils if you look on JC Whitney's site.  The advantage of using the Honda 600 coil will be that it fits with no additional work to mount it and the plug wiring will be the correct length and sheathed to protect it from the engine heat and chassis metal. But if you can't locate a Honda coil,  you gotta do what you gotta do.

I would say "Sure if it is a 1974 XLH sportster that came with
CONTACT POINTS!" Stick with the Accel, make sure you ask for
the "Points Coil" they are way better than the H.D. stock coils. use
this page, go for 2 or 4 cyl with points. like early Goldwing/KZ 650/
CB 500, and for jap stuff not H.D.
I am sorry I am a little biased, sure you can use the H.D. if you want
(the plug wires they give you may not be long enough)just get Points
type and if ya use the H.D. coil you can put a sticker in the back
window of you'r Z that sez "HARLEY EQUIPED" all the harley guys will
love it!

So I'm going with the OEM coil. Replacing the wires with 7mm ones. Now I'm looking at the
plug caps from NGK. Would it be a problem if they had resistors in them? If not, would the
ones with 5 ohms resistance be alright?
