I've pulled the gas tank off my 1972 N600 to see why the gas sending unit inside the tank
wasn't sending. (The gas guage tests OK.) A little WD40 loosend up the crud on it and the
float arm now moves freely. I've been sliding a couple of pounds of 3/8 inch nuts around
in the tank and have loosened a lot of dry powder. I'm almost ready to call it good, pull all
the nuts out with the magnet and rinse out the tank before reinstalling everything.
The tank steel is in great shape but shows a little surface rust on the outside. I'm
considering cleaning that up, priming and repainting it to the original black.
Question: The car itself is an all original car, in excellent shape, never been restored, has
just over 8,000 miles on it, including the original bias ply tires. If I repaint the tank before
putting it back on the car, do I lose the "original" status? What reduction in value would
that represent?

Re: "original" status
i would just get it hot tanked and relined at a radiator shop, a
clean new looking one is worth more than a rusty original one, its
still the original tank.
