GPNW microcars on Jalopnik

Post by Mark P Hatten »

When the engines burst to life in a parking lot a stone's throw from the Tacoma Dome, it doesn't sound like the firing of angry pistons. Instead, it's a popping, spluttering, clattering noise, as if three dozen Jiffy-Pops have started lighting off at the same time.
The rasp of air-cooled two-cylinder blends with a smoky tang rising up from the two-stroke cars, and everybody starts piling in for the trip. It sounds like small-calibre gunfire and looks like closing time at a clown factory.
Welcome to the wonderful pint-sized world of the microcar, a catch-all term used to describe any sort of vehicle that's essentially a motorcycle with bodywork. There are Isettas here, Messerschmitts, Belkins, Goggomobils, NSUs, and whatever the heck that yellow thing is. It looks like a Power Wheels version of Anakin Skywalker's Naboo star-fighter.
