how'szisdumbthing come out????

hi Everyone, Woof here . .. .im trying to remove the engine from my 72 Z600. its got a big hole in the front of the crank case( thats how i bought it). . . . i should be waiting to find some kind of manual to work from but now is the time i have to work on it so i was kind of hoping someone could give me a few clues as to things i should know. Questions include: how does the shifter unbolt? how do the the axle shafts come out of the transaxle? is there any way the motor can come out without taking the cradle that it sits on out?. any help appreciated. also, before i got the car, someone took some parts off it. looking for rear brake cylinders, front pedal cylinder, that whole weird back rear window, and maybe a passenger seat. the car is really rusty and dented up~but its so darn cute i gotta restore it. thanks in advance, Woof

as far as removing the shift linkage there is a round hollow pin
holding the shift linkage to the transaxle, remove the boot at the
firewall inside the car where the shift linkage goes into and you
will see it. the drive axles are held on by 6 bolts each at the
transaxle. remove those bolts and they will come free freom the
tansaxle. as far as removing the engine there is no other way to
remove it without removing the front suspention (the cradle) unless
you cut up the front end but im sure you do not want to do that. its
best to have a manual for the car if you're going to work on it. easy
way to find one is online. i got mine at www.faxonaoutlit.com.

way thanks!!! at least i can get the engine out this weekend. knowing it wont come out without removing the cradle will save me a lot of greif. and it looked like there were little bolts holding the inside of the axleshafts on. its so hard to proceed when You unsure of things. even if i cant get engine parts for it, i can at least be detailing the engine compartment while i figure out the next step!! thanks again, Woof

YOu can look at the manuals here and get all the info you need... I
too pulled my engine and and took in into a place that works on the
600s. B&B automotive in washington.. now i am working on the engine
compartment and removing broken bolts. Now just waiting on the motor
to get done.. hope this all helps

Hi Woof,
From what you have described (the hole in the engine), you have a bad crankshaft. To disassemble the engine, you want to obtain the rotor tool sold by Miles on this group (unless you have a buddy who already has one). I believe he sells them on the ebay website under Honda n600 parts. With the rotor removal tool and your standard tools, you will be able to completely disassemble the engine.
Finding a good crankshaft may be difficult and costly since it is a press-fit crank (more like a motorcycle crank than an auto crank) which is unique to these cars.

PS just before Honda stopped selling the cranks, they were selling for more than $1500 US. They were complete assemblies with the connecting rods and main bearings.

You know, Dale is right. And, becoming a good friend of your local Honda Dealer really helps too. There are still one or two older mechanics that have that special tool and are willing to let you borrow it. But, having your own is the best bet. Problem with your engine having thrown a rod presents a list of other problems your engine will have. If the rod lower bearing went bad then there will be aluminum flakes throughout the engine. This means that most likely every moving part has oil moving through it and the oil carried the metal flakes. The oil filter will be filled with the flakes and so will the upper end, transmission and final drive. Even the smallest flake can destroy a bearing over time.
Yes, these parts can be cleaned, but what if you missed some? I have used Transmission shops to clean some of my aluminum parts and they come out really nice.

You can remove the engine (piece by piece) from above without removing the subframe. I have done it. When you get it stripped down to just the crankcase/trans case you will need a real strong back or some friends to assist with removal. Obviously this will necessitate removing the head, then the cylinders, and anything else you can take off to make the remaining assembly as light as possible.
