intermittent engine cuts off / looses all power 1971 AN600

Post by Harper Munro »

Just bought a 71 AN600.  drove it home (40+ miles freeway/streets) no problems.  Drove it around town many times and also had no problems.  Then after about 15 mins (5 on the freeway) the engine starting cutting out.  It lost all power, and extremely difficult to keep running.  Was able to nurse it almost home before it quit completly.  After 20 mins broke down, I tried to start it, and it ran fine.  Since then I have experienced no problems on many short trips.  Then it happened again (on a short trip this time).  Pulled over, waited a minute to restart, and it ran fine.  Not sure if this is a common problem or an easy fix.  I imagine its a fuel or a timing issue.  The fact that its intermittent puzzles me.  Tank is full.  Where should I look first?  Appreciate all suggestions - thank you.

Howdy,
After I rebuilt my carb my car behaved exactly as you described!
ThOne of the little brass pieces that came with the kit had a smaller hole than the original.
I brought my carb over to Miles and he discovered the problem. He put the original brass piece in and put the carb back together and it has run smoothly ever since.
If the carb hasn't been rebuilt recently, then you may want to take it apart, dip it carb cleaner for a few hours, and put it back together with a kit. Just be sure that you don't replace any of the little brass pieces with ones that have different sized holes in them.
If the carb has been recently rebuilt then it's possible it's having the same problem I did. It's also a good idea to adjust the float properly.
Anywho, that's my experience. You're problem could be something else but it sounds exactly like what I experienced.
Hope you find the problem soon!
