New 600 onwer
Hi everyone,
I just bought 71' N600 sedan last Sunday. I am Japanese
international student in the U.S. I am flight instructor in Bay Area
CA. I am looking forward to drive this classic honda to my school and
job. I used to drive N360 in my country. What I want to know now is
this, what is the point you recomend to let me check often?? US
traffic and Japanese traffic are very different thesedays. In my
country you do not need to push gas like US. When I drove this N last
Sunday night Santa Ana to San Jose, I though it is totally different
car and driving condition. Let me know which point shold I check
before drive en=veryday?
Thank you for your time.

Congratulations, "FlyingJap" Shokiharaguchi, on your purchase.
I think you should check the oil every day before you start the car, I always do.
If you suffer from poor performance, I would recommend checking the points...
or maybe the plugs. Happy trails may you follow and follow you.

Hi Marshall,
Thank you for your advice. Oil level. Yes, it is
very important. I checked manual and found out engine
and trans use same oil, right? Should I change engine
oil little earlyer than usual?? Should I use straight
30 as manual says?? I do not know anything about
N600. If you do not mind, please tell me these
things. I live in SF Bay area CA.

Welcome to the USA, without knowing what condition your car is in I advise looking at some of the other sites and the documents in this group. Check your cam chain for wear, listen to the area where the engine number is stamped in with a long screw driver to your ear while the engine is at idle 1100 rpms. Often a warn oil pump will make noise. If the engine is laving a spot or more every time you stop, I would look at resealing the engine. Pull the plugs and see how the engine is running. CA. fuel makes all tail pipes look like your carb is running rich, but the plugs should be a light reddish color. Reset them (Don't clean the plugs with carb cleaner or other cleaners) just use an old tooth brush and maybe a scribe to clean them up and reset the points.
Look at the air cleaner, and check the oil. Then in the coming weeks, change all fluids. This will give you a benchmark to continue maintaining your car.

Re: New 600 onwer
Bill,
Thank you very much for your advices. I will do as
much as I can. It is
great running condition. When I picked up this N at
Santa Ana, I went over there with one of my friend who
drive Citroen Army6 everyday. It is air cool 2
cylinder french lemon!! He used to own N600. He said
it is great shape. After he check my car about 1
hours, we canceled rental flat bed and drove up to
SF. 420 miles. No problem at all. Each 30 minutes,
we stopped and let it cool down and check oil and
brake. No leak, clearn all way up. Last few days we
had huge rain so I did not drive this.
This car was at Japanese Classic Car Show Queen
Mary Park, Long Beach CA last Oct.1st 2005. It did
not win but for me more than enough to buy it.

PS.I am flight instructor so everyday fly over SFO!!

Shoki;
Being around aircraft like you are you know the value of a cool clean
running engine. I have a oil cooler that moves your oil filter to a remote
filter next to the battery tray and with a PH8A filter adds a bit more than
a quart of oil to your system. It also includes a oil thermostat to allow
quick warm up's and then continued temperature monitoring. Also you can add
an oil pressure and temp gauges giving you additional information. Send
your e-mail address and I will send you pictures of a recent installation in
a sedan that also put in Mike O'Connor's 40 over pistons.

Re: New 600 onwer
Hi Shoki,
These are some very good questions that I'd like to throw out to the list for great answers. I personally liked to use 20w50, but probly the most important thing is to use a detergent oil and to not try to "save" money here. Cheaper oil is cheaper and it makes a difference in the life of your vehicle; I like to think in terms of basic maintenance from Shop class in junior high(For me anyways ) frequent oil changes will keep your car happy for a very long time.
I do not think synthetic oils are good, they cost about triple with almost no noticeable benefit. They say not to mix oils, but I often mixed 10w40 with 20w50. The 600 only takes a few(Can't remember-3 or 4? My new Sundance uses 4qts) so anytime you add a quart, consider changing the oil. I do not know about early oil changes beyond that. I think one should aim for every 3,000 miles because its always more miles than planned for. Don't mix non-detergent with detergent, or don't use non-detergent at all.
Yes, you are very right, the transmission does use the same oil. Oil filters are another thing: I believe it is up inside the engine.

Bill,
Oil cooler. I do not know why I did not think
about it. Sounds great to add my future list of
"should buy". Thank you for pictures, too. My N360
in Japan never had any oil problems so I do not know
there is oil cooler kit. I will keep research how can
I keep my sedan happy. Before I bought sedan, I
expected limited information, parts and skill. I was
totally wrong. It is great to know there are so many
great source of information.
Thank you very much

Re: New 600 onwer
Hi Marshall,
Since I could not find out what kind oil in my
sedan this moment, I will change oil as soon as I back
home and weather get better. San Jose CA is very bad
weather this week and weekend. I checked old posts,
there are so many onwers use 20W50 or 10W40. I was
surprised about this because I totally believe old car
= straight oil. One of my friend also use straight
oil for his citroen army6 last 4 or 5 years. It open
my eye. Thank you very much. I agree change oil same
interval. Do not try to save money! I should not
forget this easy thing forever.
Another question. Do you use regular gas or super?
What is the difference for engine? Maybe temp? Which
one should I put in it? When I drove my sedan from LA
to San Jose, I used super. I do not have any reason
for it.

Re: New 600 onwer
Hi Bill, So... how much will this oil cooler retrofit
cost? it definite sound good. I am interested in
getting one, so... i dont have to pay for these
expensive NOS filter when went ever i want to change
the oil, i can walk into Autozone and pickup the
filter and oil and im done under 10 bucks. :) I just
recently got the car and havent even took the oil
filter out as of yet. From looking at the manual, it
looks like just a paper filter from like an ATV or
something like that. I am definitely interested in the
COOLER AND OIL Retrofit kit.
Thanks
