PUMPING OIL!

Post by riceburner006 »

Hello bill,I don't understand how the pump piston could hit the
bottom of the pump,if the primary driven hub w/ oil pump eccentric
is worn smaller. Is it because not only the "hump" is worn, but also
the opposed side is worn too, alowing the rod to Occillate W/O much
control?

Hi Rice;
Another way to look at it is that if the eccentric center is
repositioned giving it a longer throw then it will move further into that
area. The piston is held in one position and the rod is pushed further not
because the eccentric is larger but that both are giving it more room to
move in the only direction it can move. Once the piston is bottomed the
eccentric hits the riding ring of the rod and cracks it. I have taken some
apart that are just at the point of separating the stainless ring cast into
the larger end of the rod. The stainless steel ring sometimes brakes while
other times it remains on the eccentric while the rest of the oil pump rod
is chewed up in the transmission, the bearings and gears.
This is why I offer to have the eccentric sleeved to match the oil pump
rod which will allow it to maintain the center and working end length. The
cost is minimal compared to the devastating effect it can have on the
engine.
