$$ GREEN CRANKS$$

Post by riceburner006 »

Bill,in your opinion, what is the reason why the big end of the rod
fails on these 600 engines, also, which side fails first, and is there
something that can be done to prevent this.

I have really only removed a few bad crankshafts, but most seem to go out on
the clutch side of the engine. I think this has to do with the constant
drive sprockets and although it can't be proven, I appears that the oil
moves to that side of the engine first. This I believe has to do with a
lower resistance due to the oil sprayer to the drive chains. This allows
more free flowing of oil to the drive chains and also movement of metal
chips. On the other hand, I have noted more wear on the crank shaft bearing
cages in the bearings by the stater side. What can be done? check your
crankshaft against the bearing chart and make sure you are using the correct
size of crank shaft end bearings. During assembly make sure that all
bearings are replaced, look at the bearing keepers on both ends of each
Transmission shaft, and clean everything. Metal chips are the hazard.
