Backfiring and Charging Light

Post by dom123bom »

So I put together my n600 that I purchased as a shell and got it running 2 weeks ago. Everything has been fine with no problems till randomly today is started backfiring horribly and the charging light came on. Im also having a problem with my turn signal circuit so going to have to go through the wiring diagram for that. If anyone has ran into this problem or can help point me in the right direction I should start I'd really appreciate it.

1.  Check cam timing. 2.  Check movement of point breaker plate,  it can lock up  3.  Function of mechanical advance. 4.  Check to see if vacuum advance is working.
Oh, while the cam cover is off, check the middle guide and tensioner rollers, if damaged, ouch!

So I was wondering if you guys think I may be having a problem with the tensioner and or roller. When I align the t marks on casing and pulley perfect, the alignment mark on the gear doesn't seem perfectly straight with the head surface. Is it normally perfectly straight with it? I don't believe the timing is off because when I rotate the engine the equivalent of 1 tooth the alignmet is definitely too far. I have pictures but am not sure how I'm supposed to attach them to these posts

I am going way way out on a limb here and say it is a bad ground. That would cause everything you describe. Including the poorly timed collapse of the coil.

Regarding bad ground, I remember once I replaced the points and condenser and forgot to tighten the condenser.  Ran fine, timed right and drove for a while until the anchor screw loosened up, then it made symptoms you described.
On another car, I installed the same but the car wouldn't run well from start-up.  A friend suggested the condenser might be defective; sure enough...
