Rust Penetrants

Post by feltonminicycle »

I got this off my Nash Group:
Subject: Good info on penetrating oils
Of special interest to anyone who's nuts about bolts:
Penetrating Oils
Machinist's Workshop Mag recently published some information
On various penetrating oils that I found very interesting. Some of
You might appreciate this. The magazine reports they tested penetrates
For break out torque on rusted nuts. They are below, as forwarded by an
Ex-student and professional machinist. They arranged a subjective test
Of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to
Remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.
*Penetrating oils .......... Average torque load to loosen
*No Oil used .................. 516 pounds
WD-40 ..................... ... 238 pounds
PB Blaster .................... 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ..............127 pounds
Kano Kroil .................... 106 pounds
ATF*-Acetone mix..........53 pounds *ATF=Automatic Transmission Fluid
The ATF-Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid
And acetone.
Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any commercial product in this
One particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use
It with equally good results.Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is almost as good as "Kroil"
For about 20% of the price.

Very interesting, Miles.
Boy, I wish I'd had that info before removing the front stabilizer bar bracket bolts on my '71 Super Beetle recently! They were rusted and one broke after me soaking them with PB Blaster. (Of course, it didn't help that the bolt heads were facing down and gravity was working against me in this case.) At the very least, I guess I should have stuck with good ol' Liquid Wrench.
That's wild about the 50-50 ATF/acetone mix. I guess I should get some. Was that the generic version of ATF, BTW? (Some modern cars require different formulations of ATF -- I wonder whether that might make any difference, better or worse, in this application.)
Also, did the folks on the Nash group give any indication as to how many rusted bolts per penetrant they used for the tests? I assume that they used more than one per penetrant, since they said "average torque." As we all know, the amount of rusting and freezing up of bolt/nut threads can vary quite a bit from fastener to fastener, even in situations where the bolts/nuts are in quite similar conditions and proximity to each other. I would hope that the tests included at least half-a-dozen or so bolts per penetrant to achieve reliable torque averages.
Thanks for passing this info along,
Richard

Very interesting info on penetrants.
I wish there were 2 more things ranked on the list.  I'd like to see where Marvel Mystery Oil and brake fluid rank.
I've always heard about Marvel Mystery Oil (but never used it).
Dad always taught me there was nothing better than plain 'ol brake fluid for loosening up seized, rusty items, so that's what always used on my difficult cases.
