Fuel Pump Leaking

Hey all,
I'm having one of those days where you go to fix one thing and you notice another...
Anyway, while fixing the rear wheel brake cylinder, I noticed that I was leaking gas from the front end. I removed the blower to check the fuel pump and it was leaking from the bottom.
This is the first time I've had any issue with it, so I wanted to ask if these are notorious for leaking? I see that there are screws along the bottom, so I wonder if there is a gasket that needs replacement? Anyway definitely wanted to stop and ask. I know that these are precious, so I want to be cautious.

Hi Marty,
The cross-sectional drawing of the fuel pump in the sedan service manual (page 14-22) does show a gasket at the bottom. It might be worth trying to tighten those screws at the bottom to see if they're loose and causing fuel to leak past the gasket. Also, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that there's leak around either the inlet or outlet fuel connection, causing the gas to drip down the side of the pump, giving the impression that the leak is coming from the bottom of the pump itself - that's assuming, of course, that you haven't already ruled that possibility out.
I'll leave it to others with more long-term experience with those pumps to tell you whether they have a special propensity to develop leaks.
Do note that Bruce Whiting sells Japanese-manufactured fuel pumps that he says are a direct fit for the 600 sedan and coupe - just in case you end up needing to replace yours:

Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. It does cost a bit ($177.45), so I suspect you'll want to exhaust all other possibilities before purchasing one.

after dealing with my "brand-new" fuel pump that continued to fail after warm-up (despite MANY adjustments) i swapped it out for a low-pressure newfangled rotary type unit for about 25 bucks--never had a problem after that got really tired of stalling out on the freeway in my z600!

thanks for posting those pics on facebook.
yeah that's the same one I have. I removed the pump and it looks like there is a small crack that has developed on the base, near the bottom inlet. Looks like I'll need to replace just that piece. Anybody have one in good condition? I'm wondering what could have caused the cracking, other than age.
