Carb Rebuild start point

Post by davepdouglass »

Ive been following along this forum for years and have seen many posts with good info on carb rebuilds. I have 4 carbs to choose from to rebuild for my 72 N600 and while I've done many rebuilds of other carbs in the past, I always had a new parts kit to work from. I have seen that many people are using parts form a honda 1100? parts kit? and also seen where others say you can use regular accelerator pump diaphram and cut it down to fit teh 600 accelerator bowl.
Anyone point me in the direction of parts and or suppliers of these kits (pieces) as a starting point?
Also I have broken the tangs off jets in the past when trying to remove them, since I can't afford that to happen with one of these carbs, anyone have suggestions for removing stuck jets in the carb body? In rebuilding old tractor carbs I've ground screw drivers to fit the jets and carb body perfectly before removing them, anyone care to add their thoughts?
Currently I have one of the carbs disassembled and the body soaking in darb dip but I have not tried to remove any jets yet.....

On the jets, try GENTLY tapping on them with a brass punch and small hammer before trying to remove. Or take a socket the size as the jet and tap on it. I had and impact screw driver that you put in the slots and tap, but it can tear open tabs as the screwdriver tip is stronger than the brass jet..if it still won't come out take everything else out of carb and stick the spray tube of a can of carb spray down in the jets and spray then blow out good with air gun.......good luck

Oh Oh .... this is not good !!!!   Those jets come out very easy and are surrounded by an o-ring.  Soaking them in carb cleaner can destroy the o-rings (I have seen them swell up in size).  Hurry up and get that carb out of the cleaner and remove the portions of the carb which have the gaskets and o-rings.  The two jets,  the accelerators pump,  the needle & seat, the air bellows (you probably took this one off), the fuel solenoid (you probably took this off) all have o-rings which can be damaged by the carb cleaner.  The accel pump has a diaphragm (not sure if it is nitrile or other material) which could be damaged by the cleaner.
Also,  there is a plug which goes between the two jets.  And then there is the big gasket which seals the fuel bowl.
The nozzles which reside under the jets can be tapped out.  Someone mentioned using a pin punch and mallet ..... that works.  You should be able to tap it out.  Don't hit it so hard that you distort the tip of the nozzle.  When you tap it out,  it comes out through the fuel bowl side (and not the venturi bore side).
good luck,
Dale

Dale, I anticipate replacing the o rings and of all the parts mentioned only the hulk of the carb body and the jets remain in the carb dip.
