Fuel problem

Post by kevin.gailey »

I wonder if anyone has had the same problem. Fuel pump is starting to race, it is speeding up and is sometimes intermittent when I start the car i.e it won't move. If I let the car sit for an hour the fuel pump works. It has a new filter and car sat for 12 years. I checked the tank for rust but it was OK when I drained the old gas. Does this sound like fuel pump is broken? Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks, Kevin Gailey

Kevin,
You could take your fuel pump out of the car and see how well it pumps gas out of a container of gas (and not through the fuel lines of your car).   It should pump about 1 liter per minute.  You could also hook up a Mitey-Vac (or similar gizmo) and see how much vacuum is necessary to pull fuel though the fuel lines of your car.  These 2 tests might help you determine whether the problem in your fuel pump or the fuel lines of the car.  I would use the Mitey-Vac at the fuel pump location and at the fuel line location at the carb (you will need to tie the two lines which were going to the fuel pump together with a hose or fuel line barb).
good luck,
Dale
