brake shoe

Post by pommecoing »

Hello everyone,
You may remember that I'm trying to put back on the road a 1969 french sedan. Please have a look at the pictures in the file "a french N600".
I was puzzled yesterday because I couldn't put back the drum on my old but regarnished (refurbished? reconditionned?) brake shoes. Finally, I discovered that one of the shoes had a shorter(smaller?) diameter(radius?) than the others.
1/ Is there several brake shoes ref for the 600 ?
2/ Is it a brake shoe for an other car ?
3/ The shoes were heated in an oven in order to strengthen the glue. Is it possible that one of them was twisted (bended?) by the heat ?
4/ If I remove (file?) a bit of metal at one end of the shoe, I'm sure that I will be able to put back the drum. But the shoe will not fit exactly the drum : is there a danger ?
I'm looking for rear brake dust seal #43341-548-000 (x2) and return shoe springs #43171-538-000 (x4)
Hope you will understand my english. Sorry for the ???
Thank you : Pierre

Pierre, According to the parts book, there were 2  shoes for the single piston cylinder (if it makes any difference operationally).  There was only one drum, so the smaller diameter shoe doesn't look like it's going to work.  The contact area is different and will wear unevenly, so i'd get a shoe that fits.
Return springs can be had, the dust seal is going to be a challenge (reuse the old one if you can).

Pierre, the linings on the shoes could be oversize but this is usually only done if the drum has been machined 1 or 2 sizes larger than original; that is, the linings are made thicker as the drum is made thinner. Perhaps the more likely problem is that the wheel cylinder is not sliding in the slot within the backing plate where it mounts, thus preventing the shoes from centralising as you try to fit the drum. Do not modify the shoe in any way - 2 wrongs don't make it right.
