I have 1971 AN600 and the last time I drove it regularly was 7 yrs. ago. It started hard but idled and ran well.  It had a noisy top end in the rocker box area.
I parked it after running the tank dry and slowly bought upper end parts either NOS including Bill's oversized cam chain or parts that were in better condition than mine. I got the last parts three weeks ago and fired her up. On full choke it fired right up and was very smooth through out the range of rpms.  About 45 seconds later I pushed the choke in to 1/2 and the engine died.
The engine would only run that long on choke and then die. I pulled the idle solenoid and turned the key to the run position and the pin retracted. I pulled the carb and blew out the idle circuit with carb cleaner, idle mixture screw out.
Started again with the same problem. I took apart the carb again looking for an idle circuit I may have missed before.  I found fine rust particles at the bottom of the bowl. I changed the fuel filter and cleaned the carb again. Still no idle and the idle scew is turned to the max position.
I thought it might have something to do with the timing but it was static timed
using a DVM set to continuity to the gnats ass. I hate to mess with that.
Does anyone know how to get my idle back ?

hi this is dean. try removing the brake booster and plugging the hose. i found my brake booster to be leaking and causing it not to idle. it's a easy try and it was what was wrong on my honda 600.

I gotta remember that.
I had the same problem and found I was sucking air at the [intake?]
where the rubber from the carb end comes to the intake. Got that trued up
and clamped
and problem solved. If one don't work check out the other. Good luck.

Don't stop there, I have had intake clamps fail to seal, Intake manifold O
rings not seal and any of the 4 clamps to the booster fail to seal properly.
And, don't forget the puppet valve on the booster, the seal on the piston
seems to shrink with age. I have use a small O ring under the seal to make
it seal. Then there is the two nylon seals on the carb throttle shaft. The
Gasohol we are forced to use these days really eats that stuff up. And a
hot engine can cause the alcohol to boil away after sitting for a few hours
if the shrouds and cooling fan are not properly connected. So, there is a
bunch of things that can cause your Honda 600 power plant not to start every
time.
Two things can help to reduce the Alcohol problems, 1 use high test (you're
not buying that much you can afford it) 2 make sure all the fuel lines are
tight and that you let your fuel pump run until it stops before starting.

Thanks everybody for the sugestions.
I did remove the brake booster hose at the booster and plugged it. When I tried to start the car it wouldn't even make a pop on choke or off. I pulled the plugs and they both fired but were dry of fuel. I pulled the carb again and this time looked at float and inlet valve. I sprayed the valve both ways while holding the valve open.
The car started right up and actually stayed running during idle! I turned down the idle speed screw but as the engine warmed up the idle speed went up again. I had to turn down the idle speed three times before it stabilized.
Has anyone had this fast idle happen to them before?
I shut down the engine and re attached the booster hose. The car ran the same
but I could twist the hose on the booster end even though the clamp was at its tightest. I replaced the hose.
I plan on replacing the o-ring on the intake manifold as it has a set flat spot on it.
I live in Omaha and today it was 6 degrees, yesterday -10 degrees wind chill.
My 600 is in the attached garage to the house and has been 40 degrees in there lately. That is warm enough to work on car and keeps the beer at the right temp but for some reason my wife wants the garage door open when I run the car. I finally rigged a flexible duct over the tailpipe and out the garage door and shut the door down to 3 inches to slow the cold infiltration.

your wife must still want you alive..lol.  There is a gas filter in the carb.  When I got my car it kept quitting on me so I cleaned it out.. a week later it did it again than I found a lot of rust in the gas tank and had it redone and cleaned all gas lines and the filter and carb.. runs much better but do have a rough idle when cold so I am going to check for vac leaks now, other that that I am sure I need a carb rebuild.

Lewis has found a Coupe in New Mexico

Post by David Ackerman »

if anyone is looking to buy a 600, I have a complete '72 coupe that sorta runs, and a '70 sedan that has an excellent body and good paint but needs engine finished.  The coupe has a little rust but does run. Brakes need to be done on both. Started to rebuild sedans brake system, but never finished.  I dont have title on these, but can do a lein sale if someone is interested.  Bought from a friend a few years back, but he never put them in his name and lost the titles.  Located in southern Oregon.

In Oregon,  you can obtain a replacement title from the DMV.  And if you have a bill of sale,  the Oregon DMV can generate a title for you after they do the research (they look at the car age,  registration history, and owner information to determine if it looks legit).  I don't know the value of a lien sale since you appear to not be the legal owner and it doesn't sound like your name is present on the lien holder line in the title.  You should ask your friend to go online and declare the vehicle as being sold ...... that will make it easier to transfer the car to a new owner.  Otherwise the new owner is in for a bunch of paperwork and extra fees.
good luck,
Dale
