when i bought my 72 yellow honda i have been using lead additive but
when i bought my green one Mark said he just uses premium. so what
does everyone use. Also has anyone ever have any dealings with a Mark
Cross in oregon?
Thanks for any help

Re: unleaded gas or not
Hello guys
Remember OCTANE is the ability not to burn.So You want
to run premium in your car because the Honda 600 runs
on high compression 165# So if you run low octane fuel
it will detonate before the piston reaches the top of
the chamber thus causing pre ignition which will
eventually ruin your engine {Hard on Bearings and
Valves}even if you don't hear it it's still happening
In a lower compression engine it doesn't make alot of
difference because the fuel will not pre ignite .
Just to make it simple think of a diesel .Diesel is
high octane. If you where to put gas in a diesel it
would preignite and toast the engine. Also dont waste
money on octane booster all it is is kerosene so if
you want higher octane fuel add a half pint of
kerosene to 5 gal of low octane fuel . this will raise
the octane leve you can also adjust the formula to you
needs..Just smell octane booster some time if you
don't belive me .or just send a 7 dollar bottle of
booster to the lab and see what the results are.
Hope this helps

Re: unleaded gas or not
Scott,
You need to read your manual, the Honda 600 has a compression ratio of
8.3 to 1, that is low compression. High it 9 to 1 or higher. I have run
all my Honda 600's on regular for years.

Re: unleaded gas or not
No that is a low compression ratio not amount of
compression in the cylinder ,They are different and it
is a high compression engine thus the 165 lbs per
cylinder in the hond compared to 110 to 120lbs of
other lower compression engines
. Oh I really can read and I didn't say you couldn't
run low octane just said that it is better to run
higher octane for your enging it isn't some big
mystery.

Re: leaded gas or lead foot
Most of the gasoline where I live has alcohol in it, low octane gas
here starts at 87, midgrade is around 89 and Premium is 91 or 92
octane. I have always run regular in my engines and when the state
took away our Leaded Gasoline the question was raised about using
lead additive.
My machinist said that the Honda 600 has hardened valve seats so I
didn't need the lead. I have never added lead and haven't ever had
any problems. I have used octane boost a few times, but I had also
shaved the head by .030" which besides raising the compression also
changes the valve timing. This could be corrected by using thicker
gaskets under the cylinder base and/or rocker box to head gaskets.
And just because you are supposed to have 165 PSI compression,
doesn't mean you will and don't cry if you don't. Start crying when
it drops below 125 PSI and don't forget if you test it with the
throttle wide open or closed you will get different readings and if
you lube the bores before testing, you are just cheating!

Re: unleaded gas or not
Scott;
Ok, if you have read your owners manual then you know that on page 12 of
the 1971 Coupe manual, Regular grade of gasoline is recommended. But, I can
see your confusion when you read the 1972 Sedan onwers manual where it
recommends 91 research octaine, which in 1972 was medium grade gasoline with
89 being regular. The oil companies have sold us such a bunch of bull that
we now believe 87 Octain is regular.
You can burn up your cash any way you like, but your Honda just doesn't
need the extras. Unless you have some of Mike's High Compression pistons in
your engine.
