I recently bought a spare crankshaft for cheap on eBay. Upon examining it I discovered that one rod rotates nicely on it's bearings, and the other acts as though the bearings were gone, that is, the rod can move freely up and down about an inch against the shaft. It is as though the bearings are not there - but there seems to be no way for them to escape. How is that even possible? Is this even fixable? Can the crank be taken apart? Whatever goes inside the rods isn't shown in the parts catalog, which can't be good.

Re: crankshaft issue
Cranks are press fit together at factory with roller bearings inside the one piece rods. If your rod is floppy on the crank, get back with the seller and have him make amends. I don't know of anyone that would service a crank like that.

Re: crankshaft issue
Steve- yea my project car has a bad crank bearing and the only way i
was told it could be fixed is replace the entire crank with the rods
attached, so i landed up getting another crank for the rebuild.

Re: crankshaft issue
I have a collection of crankshafts where one side is bad. I have the cranks pressed apart and then collect the sides which are good and put together one usable crankshaft. Years ago, I used to be able to buy oversized piston pins. If those are no longer available, that would limit how much salvaging of the cranks is allowed.
Check out your local machine shops, small engine repair, and motorcycle shops to see if they can help you press the cranks apart. But you do need to have enough pieces to be able to assemble one good crank.
good luck,
Dale

Re: crankshaft issue
Hi Steve,
The eBay seller sold you a junk crankshaft. The roller bearings on that sloppy side were damaged and proceeded to disintegrate. And that would have spread metal throughout the engine which probably scored the bearings on what may seem to be the good side of the crank. So, even if you did rebuild the crank, the "good" side of that crank might disintegrate after a few thousand miles. You would need to disassemble the "good" side of the crank and analyze all the bearings under a microscope and make measurements of the crank journals and conn rods. That is a lot of work. When I came across cranks like you described, I tossed them.
Tell the seller you want your money back.
good luck,
Dale

Re: crankshaft issue
Dale,
It sounds like just buying a NOS crank from O'Connor's shop would be easier than doing everything you just described :)
