while we're talking about brakes...

Post by MarkN »

My '71 sedan (that I autocross) has some whimpy brakes. I've rebuilt
the rear cylinders (the single slave cylinder type; not the dual,
btw.), done a couple of brake bleeds including the booster, added new
pads and shoes, and replaced the hoses.
Can you guys (and gals) lock up your tires when doing a panic stop in
a straight line? If so, how old and what type are your tires? I can't
lock the tires up, and I run A-008's (sticky tires) or goodyear slicks
(really sticky tires).
When I am doing a panic stop, I feel like the pedal is initially firm,
and then about 1/2 way into the pedal stroke, it turns mushy... you
can keep pressing harder, but you're not going to stop any faster.
Does anyboy else have this problem? More importantly, has anybody else
solved this problem?
Thanks, Miles E.

Hi Miles;
Look at the rear brake line, I believe it is weak and balooning on you. I
know you said you replaced the hoses, but I had brand new hoses fail.

Brilliant! in all my pondering, I had forgotten about the REAR brake
