No lights

Post by isettajoe »

Greetings from northern Indiana. Last night I installed a newly
cleaned carb in my 72 600 sedan and started the car for the first time
since last fall. I used my portable battery charger hooked to the
battery to start it. Now I find that I have no lights. No headlights,
stop lights, or brake lights. I do have horn, turn signals,
hazards, lighter and radio. I wiggled and slid fuses up and down and
then put in new fuses with no luck. I looked at wiring diagram and
see that all the non-functioning things are on the same fuse. I also
see that there is a light relay. Could this be the problem? Where is
it and what does it look like? Any suggestions on what else I should
do? Thanks for any help.

Pull all bulbs, clean and replace as necessary.

Get a test light or a volt meter, and follow the path of your voltage to see
where it starts/stops. Both are simple to use. Plus, even a cheap voltmeter,
will most likey have an ohm meter position. With it you can test for
continuity in bulbs, fuses, and wiring, without guess work and
buying/changing unnecessary parts. Also, there may be a fuse on the light
switch, that may or may not affect "all" the lights. Again a test
light/voltmeter will help here also. Electrical trouble shooting is usually
very easy if you approach it with one of these simple tools, use logic, and
forget guessing. Bill

The headlight relay is under the dash and is aprox 1"x1"x3" long and
is gold in color. It screws to the cross member under your dash but I
think it only works the headlights. Pull the combo switch plugs under
the steering column and check connections, the headlights and turn
signals operate through them, might better check the hazard switch
too. The sedans have voodoo goin's on when it comes to the brakes/turn
signals.

Unplug your connectors leading to the lights and/or fuses and spray them for corrosion.
Maybe even just unplugging/replugging the connectors will help, but using the tuner cleaner really is best, do this after you probe out the voltages or while you are checking.
I'd use tv tuner cleaner, not wd-40, and spray liberally both sides of the connector then let it soak for a good 30 seconds or so( or more) to let it work, then just plug them back together again.
 I hope this helps.
