N600 value?

Post by Erik »

I know this is a difficult question to answer, but see if you can give me
some kind of guidelines.
I have an opportunity to buy a beautiful 1970 N600.
I just have no idea of what the value is. The seller is giving me a price
which may or may not be reasonable.
If you can read the following description and send me an idea what you
value this car, then I'll e-mail you thanks and what the seller is asking.
It's a 1970 N600. The body is very straight. Couldn't even find a
ding. All chrome is intact. All upholstery and headliner is good.
Engine ran well when it was parked 8 years ago. Brake pedal goes to floor
and owner said that master cylinder and maybe all 4 brakes need to have new
seals installed. Brand spanking new tires all the way around with
balancing. No radio. All service records from 1970. 85,000 miles. All
lights, electrical, fans, etc work. No cracks in glass.
Any idea on value? How about a range?
Please e-mail directly.
Thanks in advance.

Did you check for hidden corrosion ? Some key spots are the rear
shock mounts,front fenders,rockers,windshield pillars,rear
subframe, and trunk. complete brake overhaul of brakes with your
labor will cost you roughly $300. in parts, not counting the booster.
With this in mind,if body is rust free, then I would say a range of
$800 to $2000,that's if everthing in the motor is good. A price is
hard to guess!! I feel it is up to you and the seller! That milage
is also v.high for the motor,if it wasn't completely overhauled. You
could be buying a hand-grenade motor with a worn out crankshaft!

When I hear the phrase "ran well when parked 8 years ago", it sends up all sorts of red flags. Why was it parked? I figure it was some sort of mechanical failure that caused it to be parked. Does it not run now? Who knows, then, what it will need? Look at it as a very nice project car, and price it accordingly.
Good luck,

Gee Erik;
It sounds like a great deal if its really in that great of shape, I say
a great deal because there was no price he is asking for. So this leads me
to believe it is free, yes?
On the condition of the vehicle, two questions pass through my mind, 1
if it was parked and nothing is wrong with it, why was it parked? 2. The
brakes will run you about $800 to $900 to fix right which means sleeving the
cylinders, new seals, rechorming the front pistons, not to mention the brake
lines. 85K is about the right time for the cam chain to start jumping,
could have bent valves, Head job, price of new valves and the gaskets and
seals to do the job, say another 3 to 4 hundred to do that. And, don't
forget the cleanout of the carb, gastank and any plugged lines, fuel pump
... Get the drift? When they sit, the car stops running, not the
deterioration.
If the engine turns, do a compression test, it won't be accurate but you
will be able to see it there is any compression. Put some gas in the tank
and see if it will pump, if not, then pull the tank plug and see what comes
out.
Then come back with the results of your test and then we can see if there
is value here.
