Steve,
Sounds like the car was left in a field too long. When you fix the car
....use it. If you let those cars sit around too long, they may not work
right away when you go to use them.
I've noticed the Coupe rear drum brake pistons came in two different sizes
in the US. I think it was 11/16th and 5/8 and the diameter is marked on the
cylinder. The 1973 Honda Civic uses the same brake piston ( I think it was
the 5/8 inch) and parts for the 73 Civic are still available if you are
unable to find the Z600 parts. And you can also buy just the piston repair
kit which contains the seals and boots.
If you need more specifics, let me know and I will go look at some brake
parts and the rebuild kits I bought. The rebuild kit cost less than $8 two
years ago. If you live in Oregon, they sell the parts at GI Joes sports and
auto store.
good luck,
Dale
PS You will want to check out the rear wheel bearings (in the drum) before
you put the brakes back together. Let me know if you can't find new brake
drum shoes. And don't forget to replace the O-ring which goes on the dust
cover on that big axle nut. Oh yeah, get a real cotter pin and don't be
tempted to put a nail or paper clip on the nut. You can get cotter pins at
a Home Depot or Lowes or Ace Hardware or an auto parts store.
Re: stuck rear brake
Re: stuck rear brake - Civics
The 73-74 Civics have 11/16" cylinders, the cheapest fix is to buy
the complete cylinder and use the pistons with seals & boots, I think
cost is usually about $20ea. or buy seal kits alone for like $10ea
you need 1 kit per wheel.
If you have the 5/8" cylinders I sell kits if your cylinder is good
$10.00/2 seals & boots. If not then send me your cylinders, I bore
them to 11/16" on my lathe and rebuild them with new seals/boots and
I supply the 11/16" pistons. These I sell for $40ea because the other
way is to get them sleeved in brass for $60.00each, or I sell sleeved
rebuilts for $65ea, not a money maker for me, just fun to build.
You better buy new shoes also, I have for $25/4 or you can buy them
locally - same as Civic 73-74.
