Cleanin' Stuff

Post by turbotwo »

I've use Gunk Engine Degreaser for years, but it stinks and is
probably not enviro friendly. Now I use Oil Eater which is available
at Costco for about $6.00/gal. I guess it's like Castrol and it does
warn about applying to HOT aluminum. I use it in my Degreaser tank in
a 50% solution with water. Occasionally I will have to float off the
oil slick with newspaper.
One problem I experienced with the Oil Eater is when I left a stator
assy submerged overnight. All the plastic coating disolved off the
copper windings.
If you can tollerate the fumes, Lacquer thinner is the best solvent
for degreasing. Keep it out of bearings which you don't plan to
dismantle like the fan assy.
Here's a picture of an engine compartment with rebuilt engine of the
car I am currently rebuilding:

The engine compartment was cleaned with full strength Oil Eater and
hosed with hot water. Since the engine is rebuilt all parts had to be
cleaned. Most of the castings got blasted with 60 mesh sand, it gives
a dull lightly textured finish.
The original finish from Honda was smooth and lacquered with clear.
The lacquer yellows with age. If you prefer more the original finish
you can Scotch Brite the surface under running water or with sumpin'
like WD-40.
Cleanin' Stuff takes time, no matter how you do it.
