600 electric car

Post by Mark »

Well it sounds like a neat idea but there are good reasons why you don't see them.  Even with CARB demanding that Detroit to produce them it is a lost cause presently.   1.  Gas is cheap!  Even at $5 a gallon you won't see electric cars.   2. Practicality   Some where when helping a friend build his dream car (electric conversion of a Ford Escort) I came across this little bit applied physics....  The energy in 1 gallon of gasoline weighing 6 pounds equals the energy of 700 pounds of lead acid batteries................   Oh Oh.......   That Escort needs the running gear of a much larger car just to care the batteries.   Yea there are better batteries out there but we can't afford them....   Honda and Toyota Hybrids can afford to put in better batteries but even then they are sold at a loss to the maker.....
Promotion you know.    The performance of the Hybrid compared with gas powered version makes you wonder why especially when fossil fuel is used to generate the juice to charge most of the batteries.
