Play in wheel

Post by lcruizerdude »

My N has about a 2.5 inch play in wheel, where is the first place I
should look. The sway bar bushings are ok.
I've also got alot of oil from the points, is that a cam gasket gone
bad?

Steering rack internal bushings are shot.
Oil in points is cam seal, I found some double lip seals that should
cure the oil drippin' blues.

Miles;
I found that some were using the clutch drum inner seal for the cam
seal. The rotation casting in the seal is not there and caused it to allow
oil to enter the distributor. Have you found a replacement?
troutvortex;
If your going to install a new seal then make sure it has the numbers
5-13 and the clock rotation directional arrow. The NOK seals also have the
numbers AH0981E for the cam seal and AC0981E for the clutch seal.
Before changing the seal, remove the battery, pull the points, breaker
plate and advancer assembly and look to see if the lip of the seal has
flipped out. Some times this happens and all that is necessary is to take
the curved edge of a scribe and push it back in place. If this is not the
cause, then yes, the cam seal can be replaced without removing the cam. But
first look at the surface of the cam after the old seal is removed. Use a
hook tool and pull the old seal out. Then inspect the seal to see if it is
old or did something cut it. When replacing the seal, a bit of oil on the
inner part of the new seal and an appropriate socket, tap it in place with a
small hammer. Replace the advancer assembly and points and you should be
done.

Bill,
Thanks for the info on cam seals. Do you know where I can find one
if I need one?
Regarding the steering rack, Miles wrote that the internal bushings
are shot. My hanes book says there is an adjustment nut A and B that
can eliminate the play if the internal parts aren't to shot. Can
these be adjusted without removal of the engine? Secondly if the
internal bushings are shot, is it possible to replace these
bushings? where can I find them, and again can this work be completed
without removal of the
motor?
Thanks,
Jason
PS. Thanks for the info Miles.

Miles is correct;
The upper and lower bushings for the pinion shaft were made with
vulcanized rubber on the out side. The grease caused them to liquefy and
there is the cause for the steering wheel slop. If you go to the ANZ page
in the files section there is a how to article on How To repair your rack.
And, yes you can remove it without pulling the engine.
