Hello listies!
Well I think that my little All Japanese meet was a
success. For a little local get together things went
well. In attendance were Carl Hockett, Adam Bradley,
Miles Chappel (he had Dinky the shortened Honda 600)
Bruce Dewing, Matt Spielburg, and the two others whos
names escape me at the moment. Someone enlighten me,
my brain is mush from all the coughing. And of course
Shroder, my dog, was there too. He stole a shishkabob
off the table. There were 4 Datsun 411s (including my
parts car most of it is still there) 3 Honda 600s
and one very rare 67 Toyota S800 sports coupe, a Yugo
and a 37 Chevy bus. The Yugo guy and the Chevy guy
are into the Hondas, they just didnt have one running
today. The food went well again.
I want to especially thank everyone for helping me
get the last of my brakes installed and bled. I tell
ya, bleeding brakes is so much easier with 3 (or more)
people involved. I Had Miles pumping, Carl running
around checking and double checking for leaks and
adding to the reservoir (there were several leaks, see
below) and me cracking the valves. Yea I know a
pressure bleeder system is easier, but I dont have
one and Im not made of money. Ive done some test
drives and I think Im ready to go down to the DMV and
get it legal again.
My Project Datsun has been a year in the making. I
got it last August, running, no windshield, no brakes.
Now, after a year of engine tinkering, total brake
replacement and a new(er) windshield its moving under
its own power. I had a hellofa time getting all the
brake lines in. Doesnt matter how careful you are
bending them they still wont quite line up. There was
some on the fly bending. The one up the middle with
the union was especially tricky. Finally after lunch
we got to pumping some fluid and looking for leaks.
The first was at the rear split. I went so far as to
remove it to examine the flare. It was OK, the line
just wasnt quite bottomed out and seated. The second
was at the 3 way spliter on the firewall. That one was
cantakerous too. Then there was one at the master
itself. It wasnt quite assembled tight enough. Then I
drove it around, parked it, took the group photo, said
goodbye to everyone. After they all left I noticed a
puddle at the front wheel. AHHHH! It turns out that my
fancy new braided steel line was leaking! I studied it
and luckily it was leaking from a fitting adapter. I
thought it was a rotating fitting, turns out that the
actual end of the line screwed to an adapter that
screwed into the brake piston. So I sinched that up
and no more leak! The car stays cooler when in motion,
and the auto tranny is happier with the right amount
of fluid. My rear makes a TON of noise though. I need
to replce the diffy and diffy bearings. Its great to
have it on the road, and so many of you helped me out.
Next victim: My Honda 600. A little cam trouble to fix
and shes on the road too! Have a great weekend and
stay tuned for the pictures!
