EZ Alignment

Post by timk11 »

Here's a quick way to make your car track straight. I used to do it
by taping 2 tape measures on my front wheels - one in front & 1 in
back, crawl around in the dirt and make adjustments, roll the car
back and forth and set the Toe at 1/8".
Maybe you have an alignment shop that can do it, or maybe they laugh
at you when you take your 600 in for anything?
I found a real easy way to do alignments when you don't have a
helper. An alignment is simply making your back wheels follow the
fronts, no squeeling on corners, no worn tires. Open the engine hood,
Loosen 2 19mm nuts on steering rack, Turn your front wheels where
straight should be, remove wheel caps, place a straight 4' long 2x4
spanning the front wheel, Eyeball it parallel to the side of the
body, Using a 14mm open end wrench rotate the tie rod until the board
parallels the side of the body. Do one side then the other. Make sure
you don't unscrew the tie rod so far it falls out of the outer ball
joint. Tighten the 19's again. Test drive, recheck.
You can double check your work by setting toe inwards 1/16" to 1/8".
I set Dinky's toe 2 months ago with a 2x4, prior to that my tires
wore out fast. There's only one adjustment on the 600, no caster, no
camber, Toe Only.
