N600 sedan - compression

Post by Greg Prentice »

Hello all.
Now that I have my brake system up and running…..
Noted some blue smoke out the exhaust while driving.
Checked compression – approx. 100 psi for both cylinders – should be ~150 psi.
Wet compression test changed little – so rings are probably ok.
Checked valve clearance – all good.
Checked head nut torques – all good.
When I rebuilt engine I used a copper head gasket from ‘Honda600carparts’.
I just noticed that this gasket needed annealing before install to soften it – I did not do this.
Thinking perhaps this is cause for low compression.
Does anyone have experience with this copper head gasket ?
Thanks.

Is power ok? Maybe just drive it and ignore the blue cloud following you.  Dad

Greg,
New copper head gaskets used in the motorcycle industry typically do not need to be annealed unless you are reusing it. (the advantage of solid copper gaskets).  Your blue smoke may be worn valve guides, a common issue. Most notable after engine deceleration and then acceleration.  During the deceleration, manifold vacuum pulls oil through the intake valve guides, thus the smoke.  Newer cars and motorcycles have valve guide seals, Honda 600s dont.  Your low compression for a rebuilt engine is something to address.
Hope this is helpful.

Going to a thicker oil has reduced the blue smoke…
I will just drive it – not had at highway speed yet….
Maybe will do leak down test…..

Typically copper head gaskets are for racing where the head gets removed frequently. I definately wouldn't use one on a daily driver
because the amount of oil leaks we have with just the stock gaskets. I always apply Honda Bond or Three Bond when I assemble an engine
and don't think the copper would benefit from that.
What rings did you install? and if they were from the same source were they installed correctly? I just got a supply of Hastings
rings and even though they are in separate pouches they don't say which way is up. Then did you install the ring gaps in thirds? I know
they don't stay that way, they walk around, but you have to start somewhere.
I would suggest a leak down test. That is a reversed compression
test where you pump air through the spark plug hole and listen where it seeps out. I made my own leakdown tester with an air regulator and the hose from
a compression tester. Then rotate engine to TDC where valves are closed and block the crank so it cant turn - easy to do with a 17 or 22 mm wrench braced against cross bar. Remove oil cap and air filter for easier listening. Apply about 20 PSI and see what happens.

Well I get blue smoke after I rebuilt my N600 and Z600 from time to time .
I may have to use a better set of rings
Chrome Coated rings ? is what people are telling me I might be saying that wrong Sent from my iPad
