Post by elliasnassif »

WHERE THE HECK CAN I FIND THESE THINGS ALSO NEED TO FIX THE MALE PART OF MY VOLTAGE REGULATOR PLUG THE WIRES ARE COMING OUT OF THE BOTTOM THIS IS THE SIDE THATS CONNECTED TO THE HARNESS... PLEASE HELP SO CLOSE TO FIXING HER. I FINALLY FOUND A GOOD REG AND RECTIFIER. ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT IT KEEP POPPING THE MAIN FUSE. THE HIGEST AMP IVE FOUND IS 35 AND IT POPS AFTER I CRANCK IT FOR A COUPKE SECONDS. IVE ALSO BURNT AN OLD REGULATOR FROM PUTTIN A NEWER 50A MAXI FUSE FROM PEP BOYS. IM SO CLOSE I NEED HELP!!!!!

If you are blowing a 35A main fuse and smoking a regulator with a 50 amp fuse STOP! A 45A is NOT going to cure it. Something is WRONG! Shunt a ammeter across where the fuse belongs and see what the amps are while quickly trying to crank. Then disconnect 1 electrical item at a time until the amperage is within a acceptable range. Then fix the excessive draw in the circuit that is causing it. Very simple electrical schematic compared to newer cars.

Hi everyone,  As a mechanic for more than 40 yrs, and working on these types of situations, also I own 4 of these vehicles, if you are blowing a 40 amp fuse there is a major short in a circuit somewhere. the only way I know of to find these types of things is to isolate each wire and circuit independantly of each other. now this being sid there is a tool called a "short finder" that is designed just for this situation. these can be found at most auto parts houses or from a tool truck like snap-on or mac. Put in between each circuit it can be found the short circuit finder is going to pop off until the short is found. then the wires involved can be traced out to find where they go and eventually the ground short.
My gut instinct is to ck the power wires first then each and every wire loom involved  I strongly suspect that by blowing that large of a fuse, it is two wires fried somewhere that are touching and causing the fuse to blow.
 Hope this Helps  Loren

Make sure that all of the wires into the white plug that comes from the regulator are connected properly. I had the fuse box melt, fuse blown & battery blow up because the white wire from the regulator was not connected to the plug. After I replaced the regulator, with fully inspected) wiring, I never had a problem again.

It sounds like you have a problem on the alternator / Charging circuit.  You don't need this working to start your car.  So,  I suggest you disconnect the wires coming out of your alternator below the fan belt pulley (especially the 4 white wires going to the rectifier). When you disconnect them,  insulate them so they are not touching the chassis or other wires.  Then see if you can start the car and not pop any fuses.  If this works,   I would check your alternator section and verify you have the wiring connected properly.
If you are still popping the primary fuse with the alternator wiring disconnected,  then I would suspect a problem in the starting circuit.  Somewhere you have a path to ground.  Check the starter solenoid and the wiring to the ignition switch.  I have seen shorts in the ignition switch and the starter solenoid and these currents will pass through the primary fuse (45 amp).  The starter motor is not fused because it draws too much current.  Many auto part stores will test your starter motor  for free if you take it out of the car and take it to the store.
Good luck,
Dale
