cleaning
Hello all.
I have my N600 engine torn apart and have started tackling the parts cleaning.
Does anyone have an easy method to clean cooling fins – maybe soaking the cyinder barrel in something??
Thanks.

Re: cleaning
I used a transmission shop to clean them, but they still came out different shades of gray, not shinny.

As for most parts cleaning I have a "Benchtop pro" a really good cleaning system. I am at the point of cleaning my cooling fins also and was HOPING that bead blasting would work. I also have an aluminim cleaner from NAPA called alluminim brightner, I am not really thrilled with it.I can smell acid in it so maby??????? a mild meriatic acid??? any thoughts on mild acid besides be safe. thanks Jay

Re: cleaning
I have used oven cleaner to clean aluminum parts with great success with no damage to surfaces. I will try that on the fins.

Re: cleaning
The transmission shop uses a citric acid solution in their cleaning rack. Parts are hung on the rack with the solution sprayed under pressure to cut through the crud. But even then not everything is removed and there is some scraping. However all the grease is gone. Glass bead like sand blasting gets into everything and everything then needs to be cleaned again. But as I said earlier, any acid causes everything to come out in different shades of gray. So I paint the exterior of the engine cases, cylinders and such to give them a fresh aluminum look.

Re: cleaning
Harry: Bill's advice is good, but I would caution you to BE SURE that any threads or oil-passages are plugged up when giving parts any "blasting" treatment. You don't want any leftover sand or beads floating around or blocking things. Just a caution. --Bryan

Re: cleaning
Hi Greg,
What is your goal on the engine cleaning? Is it to clean off the grime and improve the heat transfer or are you trying to achieve a "new" look? The Honda 600 engines had a coating on the aluminum which turns yellow/brown/dull gray with age.
If you want to clean it to improve the heat transfer, you can use cleaners such as Gunk or steam clean it or use a brush & solvent. The aluminum will still be dscolored. You can also have an engine machine shop cold tank it for you in their cleaning solution.
If you are looking for the new look, you can clean up as described above and then have it bead blasted. This will remove the coating but will give you the new look. Without the coating, you will be not have the aluminum protection unless you find another coating or spend lots of money to have the aluminum anodized.
good luck,
Dale
