Oil Leak
Just got my top end back together and am leaking oil from the top of the head in the back. It appears to be coming from near the head bolts. I do have the head nuts installed properly and to the correct torque.
Any ideas?
72 Coupe.
Thanks,
Pete

Re: Oil Leak
Hi Pete;
One cause might be…
Several things are happening when the cam-box, head is bolted to the cylinders of the Honda 600 engine.
First all surfaces need to be both clean and flat making a good mating surface for the head and cam-box gaskets.
Then all the bolts need their required torque in the correct order to maintain the surfaces mating them to the gaskets.
Because the fire ring is a harder material than the gasket material it needs to be the same thickness as the gasket material so the rear of the head gasket can seal the oil traveling up the two holes in the back of the cylinder, head and cam-box parts of the block.
(See attached picture and page 4-7 paragraph a. of the Honda Sedan & Van shop manual.) There is significant flow provided by the engines oil pump to push all the oil through the engine every minute at idle.
Which is multiplied with higher RPM’s creating a situation where the oil is looking for the least resistance to make it out of these two holes in the back of the engine.
This is why Honda put a tacky material across the back section of the head gasket to ensure the gasket sealed these two oil passages.
Also there are two cap nuts on the rear center covering these two studs forcing in the direction (left and right) to lubricate the cam and components in the cam-box.
If these two cap nuts are not in place there may be a restriction.
Any restriction no matter how small will result in a leak.
Any scratch in the surfaces of the mating areas on either side of the head or cam-box gaskets will result in a leak.
So, if the area the leak is coming from is the back center top of the cylinders where the head along with the cam-box is bolted in place this could be the cause of the leak.
What can be done to solve this problem?
I use Hondabond high temp or Prematex Ultra Silver both of which are RTV type sealants, and cure rather quickly on the gaskets.
Which is necessary if you want to start your engine within the first 24 hours.
Otherwise anyother type of sealant could be blown out when you start the engine.

Re: Oil Leak
Hmm, sounds like you may be missing o-rings.

Re: Oil Leak
If the cylinders are original to the 25 engine, they didn't have O rings at the base of the cylinders.
