Hello, I was thinking about taking out my brake booster. I'm currently only using the two front brakes anyway. I have a brake line Tee fitting I can use to connect the two front brakes to the main master cylinder.
I was just wondering, has anyone ever removed the brake booster and only used the master cylinder attached to the brake pedal?
If so, did the brakes still work ok? Was it really difficult to stop? Does it cause more wear on the master cylinder since it has to do more work and apply more force with the brake booster gone?
thanks,
Mike
Eliminating the Brake Booster?
Re: Eliminating the Brake Booster?
I have removed two of these in the past and still have a n600 now without a brake booster I do not notice a difference. But I did not do any pre-testing. Now before all the critics pop out of the wood work. Most of my reasoning for not having one was, finding parts 10-15 years ago were very hard to come by, now with the people in this group and the choices that you have on rebuild parts I would make a different choice if I were to be rebuilding a brake system today? "I KNOW I KNOW they wouldn't put it their if it wasn't designed to have it". Got the speech before. I've been driving around for years with out one and have not had any issues.

Re: Eliminating the Brake Booster?
I can't imagine it mattering on such a lightweight car. I drive a Spitfire w/ manual brakes, and it is heavier, and stops fine. I would be more concerned w/ the statement that you have no rear brakes.

Re: Eliminating the Brake Booster?
Hi Mike, The car will stop without the booster. However, my car stops MUCH better with it!
I drove my car around for quite a while after buying it without doing anything to the brakes.
I really had to stand on the brakes to get it to stop.
I finally tore the booster apart and rebuilt it by using good parts from more than one old booster thanks to Miles.
After getting the booster rebuilt and correctly installed it was like night-and-day.
I couldn't believe how much better the car stopped with the booster.
I further improved braking power by doing a brake job on the front. Even better!
I'm working on the rear brakes and the rebuilding the master cylinder (again thanks to Miles) since the engine is apart and the car is on stands.
I totally expect the braking to improve a bit more by having the rear brakes working properly.
The rear brakes can provide 25% of your braking power.
So, if it were my car I'd re-do all of the brake components and have it all functional.
I mean, seriously, it's your brakes!
My $0.02 worth. ;o) kev

I side with Kevin - and if your sharing the road with the rest of us we would hope your brakes will be as good as they can be. We owe it to the rest of the Old Car Hobby to keep our cars functioning as they are supposed to. I would hate to see your fresh restoration flattened against the rear of another vehicle because your braking power was not what it's supposed to be.
