Is this an original?

Post by J Graf »

Is this an original Honda 600 optional roof rack, or is it an after market addition?
eBay item: 201025994974
Oh, and it is not mine, nor do I have any relationship to the seller.

It's not original (it looks like a VW rack, adapted perhaps).  The correct roof rack has a parallel tube thing.  A while ago, a N600 on American Pickers had a roof rack, that was original.
It's a good looking car, but where's the heater blower?

Yes, indeed, it reminded me of the original roof rack my folks had on their bug back in the mid 60s. I also noticed there was no heater blower. Didn't the Hawaiian cars come standard without a heater? Is this, perhaps one of those? I also see there is no front bumper override.

I agree with Bruce, I believe it is a VW Bug Rack

It turns put to be a vintage style, new after market bug rack, based on images returned on my google search for vintage vw bug roof rack. Here's one on eBay: item number 221224119221.

No, the heater was removed, the Hawaiian cars had the header pipes going to both sides with the heat coming off the fan using two ducts (one on either side).   See the bracket for the heater fan?
That wouldn't be there if it was a car built before chassis ANXXX-XXX-XXXX.
His chassis number is ANXXX-XXX-XXXX, which was built in April 1970.  Nice car though, just missing a few parts.

Bill,
The 69 sedan I had in Hawaii had the early head but the later style fan shroud. It had no heater at all. It is hard to figure these cars sometimes

Hi Tad;
Yes you may have, I have purchased the angle port heads over here and ran a setup much the same as the early sedan and that was on a coupe.  I used a after April 71 fan and coupled the heater motor to what ever I could get off the engine.
There is a configuration that gave heat to the early exhaust system and available through the parts system (please see attached).   In the 14 years I lived on Oahu the defroster was on plenty in the early mornings (on my other daily drivers) I was not into Honda 600's at the time.  But given that they were available it's not unreasonable to think they were on the car.  I know all the other cars I owned while there had heaters and defrosters for the windshield.  Not often used but handy when the rainy season came around.
