Towing Options?

Post by bobs600honda »

I need to transport a Honda 600 sedan about 500 miles. Although the car is running, I'd rather not run it for 500 miles!
What are my options for towing? U-haul trailer (car completely on trailer) or half-trailer (only front wheels on trailer)?
Please advise!
Thanks
Bob

I have a photo of towing option in 2cylinderhondas Photos section "1972 Z600 Black & Blue". I brought back my black one from Gerogia to South Carolina this way.

Bob, i brought two honda Z's back to Minnesota from Michigan. One was in the bed of my 87 Dodge pickup and it had a tow dolly behind it with the second. The car will fit between the wheel wells of an 8' standard box as the car is about 4' wide, but sticks out about 6" to a foot - so You have to definitly anchor it in. To get it on and off we had 4 guys lifting.

While towing with two or 4 wheels on the ground sounds like the way to go, you should check with the states your driving through.  Many have a requirement to  have the vehicle with current tags and insurance if any wheels touch the street.  Off the ground on a trailer is your best bet.

Hi Bob,
   Here are some of the options I have used;
1)  The U-Haul car transport trailer with all wheels off the ground.  Worked great.  At the time it cost me $50 per day for in-town.
2)  A tow bar with all four tires on the ground.  The design of the Honda 600 does allow this method of towing without damage to the engine/transmission.  It is the method mentioned in the Honda owner's manual.
Harbor Freight has a tow bar
which could be configured to work.
When I used a tow bar,  I took off the front bumper and made an adapter which attached at the same spot as the bumper to the chassis (2 bolts per side) and mated with the tow bar I was using.
If you use a tow bar,  make sure you unlock the steering wheel.
3)  If you use a tow dolly,  make sure you leave enough clearance at the back of the car.  Those cars already are low to the ground and putting the front of the car off the ground does not leave much space in the back for clearance.
BTW,   I saw the comments from Bill C about insurance and registration.   Check with your local DMV to find out the laws in the state where your vehicle is registered.  In my case,  I had a car which had plates but expired registration tags which I wanted to transport to Arizona.  I was able to purchase a 1 week temporary permit for my vehicle in my home state and drive it across 3 states without problems   (I was driving it and not towing it).  I only needed to comply with the laws for my home state.
good luck,
Dale

I hauled a Honda N600 from Oklahoma City back to Wisconsin a couple of years ago on an open U-Haul 6 x 12 trailer with ramp. Two of us pushed the car up the ramps -- very carefully, though, since there is very little clearance, perhaps three inches on each side, as I recall. I uploaded a photo under the album name "Trailering a Honda."
I chose to trailer it because I didn't want to risk burning out a bearing, though the risk, admittedly, is low. Another car I simply drove home, but that was only 170 miles.
Be sure to tie the car down extremely well. On the way home, in southern Iowa, I hit black ice and lost control of the van and trailer. But, God is good and I was fortunate to be able to stop the fishtailing and regain control without leaving the pavement. It helped that it was 4 in the morning and there was no one else on the interstate near me at the time because I used the whole width of the road, and shoulder, before things settled down. The car never moved on the trailer!
