Starter motor out?

Post by zinc2u »

Getting the starter motor working again may not be a big deal.  Here are some of the things which go wrong;
#1   bad connection where the small gauge wire connects to the starter solenoid.  Unplug and clean the connection or put a new connector on the wire.
#2   bad connection where the large gauge cables connect to the solenoid.  Disconnect, clean, and reattach.
#3   solenoid not working.  You hear a click when you turn the ignition key but no whirl of the starter motor.
     This is due to the contacts in the solenoid being dirty or burned away.  Take the solenoid apart and clean up the contacts.  The rectangular posts can be cleaned with a metal file.
The metal contact connected to the plunger can also be cleaned with a file or you may need to silver solder a replacement section of copper.  I used to use a copper cent but those are hard to find now.   Since the 1980s,  the one cent coin has been zinc with a copper plating which will not work.
#4  Starter gear on the solenoid is worn down.
Good luck trying to get a new bendix or replacement gear.
#5.  Starter motor not working.   Problem may be in the area of the brush plate.  Brushes can still be obtained if they are worn out.  Clean out this area and the area where the brushes contact the motor (is that called the commutator?).  Be gentle when cleaning the commutator since if you rough it up it will cause the brushes to wear quicker.
Much of the starter motor can be repaired or rebuilt.  The gear on the starter motor may be the most difficult item to find or repair.
good luck,
