So I went to two shops. Neither of them could cut the brake rotors for the Z600. The cutting tips won't extend far enough in to reach the small diameter rotor surface. I think I'll have to go to a machine shop. My rotors are very rusty.
What has been your experience with this? Other solutions?
Thanks folks!

if you want to try and exchange them as cores for new turned one look here.

thats all i have. the minimum he accepts as a core must have at least 9mm of meat left on them to be turned down.

Ok, from what I understand you have two rotors that are not warped just rusty?
I use 80 grit sanding disc on a die grinder and resurface it. They work great, because all you are removing is the rust not a bunch of metal. I have even done them on the car.

Re: Cut brake rotors?
In my opinion it is a waste of time and money.
My guess is your discs are not warped which is the only reason to cut them. Cutting wastes good material and there are none left on the shelf.

Re: Cut brake rotors?
I have to agree with Bill. I usually will put them in my blast cabinet and blast them clean. The small amout of pitting left over, does no harm whatsoever. These things are so thick and don't ever get hot enough to cause warping. Now if they got in to metal to metal contact for very long - then they most likely are trash.

Buy a media cabinet at harbor freight tools with some 80grit glass/sand/media and it will make everything better. Turns all your old parts into new ones again. I think I have Carpal Tunnel from using it so much. The only thing that would be better is If I could get the whole car in the cabinet, then I would be set;-)
Who the culprit that caught me slipping and beat me out on eBay on the ARii models ? Let me know how the quality is when you get it. I will just have to order from Japan now.

I wasn't the one who beat you on the models but I bought 2 already. Quality looks nice bit then again I haven't built a model in 20 years so I could e horribly wrong.

Re: Cut brake rotors?
I haven't turned rotors since the 80's. Even if they are damaged from letting the pads backing plate and or rivets grind in, I just throw on the cheapest pads as they will eventually wear down enough to the same profile as the disk. In rare cases, you could take the best pad left and switch it around to the most damaged rotor face and run it for a few days in order to dress that face a bit so when you put new pads on they dont see as much extra wear. I would replace rotors if grooved badly. I avoid getting "better" pads as they seem to be of a more abrasive nature thus causing the disk to wear more. Then again I am easy on my brakes so my staff lasts longer. Flame away.
