Anyone ever try and re-tap the block where the fan housing bolts on?
Has anyone ever had to re drill and tap the bolt holes not he block where the fan housing bolt to the engine?
my Z600 is at MPH in portland right now being checked out since i just purchased it and mark came across this issue. he thinks sometime ago the fan assembly was loose and it wore out all the threads for the hosting to bolt to.
He's trying to re tap them a bit bigger and save it.
Has anyone ever had to do this and what was the outcome??

Yes,have seen it several times. Suggest tap holes and heli-coil them so you can retain the correct bolts. Going oversize on the bolts will create fitment problems with the bushings.

Yes, there are a bunch of inserts available like Keen-serts, Time-serts, Helicoils to name a few.
All come in metric sizes.

One other option. Re: Anyone ever try and re-tap the block... bolts
One other option. Let the group comment. I don't know if this will work. You have to check assembly clearance.
If you have a little tread left, (1) clean the hole real good. Use carb. cleaner or acetone, etc. and qu-tips. (2) Get a stud about 1/2" or longer than the original bolt that matches the threads. ( I've made them from long bolts. Thread a nut on the long bolt. Make the cut and pass the nut through the cut threads to help clean them-up. Two other nuts tightened against each other on the other end of the threads can help provide a grip. A fine file will also help clean threads.) A grade 5 or better stud/bolt is recommend but not always necessary. (3) test fit the stud with the housing. If a nut and washer will now hold the housing then (4)install the stud with stud grade Loctite. If the stud is a little "wobblely" in the hole, (5) you might be able to use the housing (tighten the nut lightly until it sets in 12-24 hours, then re-tighten) to line-up the stud.

One other option. Re: Anyone ever try and re-tap the block... bolts
Forgot to mention two things. Sometimes a little longer than stock bolt will pick up unused good thread. Cleaning the tread hole is still a good idea before trying this. Also the two nuts tightened against each other on the non-block side of the stud can provide a grip for tightening the stud into the block.
Best Wishes,

I get what you're laying down. Its at MPH specialties in Portland right now and Mark seems very knowledgeable with these cars. He's the one helping me get it going. I'm gonna leave it up to him on what he decides to do to try and fix it.
I've done what you're speaking of with bolts on exhaust manifold bolts many times on 80s-90s hondas
Thanks
