I have two Z600s. one was all rusted out and is sitting unfinished on a shortened Geo Metro frame. The other one the body is kind of ruff but i did do some work on it. It has a hole in the bottom of the front of the engine block so i hadnt done anything with it. I was trolling Youtube last night and came across some really cool videos of a Z600 that some kids did an electric conversion on in Tijuanna Mexico. There are about 6 videos where they start with taking the engine out of the car. Cutting the engine/trans apart and they block the front of the trans and put an electric motor in the thing, It shows the battery packs and how its all hooked up. Then at the end it shows a chase car following it all over the streets of Tijuanna thru all the slum area. Its actually pretty cool. Unfortunately for me i cant read or understand spanish so i dont know how far and how fast they can get this thing to go. One of the videos is titled Electric Vehicle Conversion Mexico Honda Coupe 600 1972. I know i could probably do a setup like this on mine and id consider it if i could find out how fast it can go and how far between charges. I agree with Bill, I have only worked on 2 Honda 600 engines, but lots of racing motorcycle, go-Karts and auto engines over the years. Like Bill and Miles have said in past posts and pictures showing massive failures, the engine is marginal at best in stock USA configuration.
Things I see as weak or problem areas:
*The oil pump.
*The soft crank, flame hardened with rollers.
*#219 Cam chain, rollers and guides all weak.
*Air cooled, very high operating temps.
*Combined engine and transmission oil, only about 3 qts.
*600cc motorcycle engine lugging around 1,500-2,000 lbs. depending on how many people you cram in.
*Engine must turn 6,000+ RPM just to run on a highway.
Don't get me wrong, I like my coupe and Honda was trying to build a cheap car. It is a clever design, but even the Honda engineers gave up on it. I like making things go faster, but this is not a good base to start with.
Just my 2 cents.

I agree with Bill.
In other words, it's hard enough to source the parts for a stock rebuild so better to leave these engines stock. Also, while you might make them faster, they will never ever be fast when you use the original engine as a strarting point for a modded motor.

I can speak to this too& to Matt or anyone else wanting/needing their N/Z to go fast
I have to pile on and say dont use the stock motor to go there.. I had an N in college and learned way back then how fragile the stock motor is (a bit of abuse over-revving it one too many times).. I now have my 2 nd
N after all of these years, and the first thing I did was look into cams/Hawaiian Head/ etc looking for power.. as was so well stated, you can make the stock motor fast-er, but never truly fast& then theres the stock brakes&
Having said that, to Matt and others willing to mod, these light little bodies are good candidates for a motorcycle engine- just know its a tremendous amount of work to do right.
Im doing a VFR800 repower on my N, and at the one year point I have only front and rear suspension to show for it (the car is now a rear wheel drive/ IRS)
I fell in love with the N body style in college, and always
thought it would be such a cool car if only it had more power/handling/brakes.. So if youre so inclined, find a rust free shell and start fabbing J
