Car stuck in REVERSE SOS

Dear Members:
I am sending this SOS for help solving a problem.
I proudly reinstalled the engine of my 1971 n600 this morning after doing some exhaust manifold work.
The problem is that the gear shift is now stuck in reverse!!
I had no problems before I did the removal and reinstallation.
During the removal I tried to cheat by not removing the pin that connects the lever to gearbox. I did remove the bolt, though to enable the engine to drop but later (after dropping the engine) decided it was not a good idea. The gears shifted even after that.
I later temporarily used a screw in place of the pin to check shifting ease and it worked (?).
After the installation I realized that the gear wouldn't shift properly and started tapping, pulling, wriggling all to no avail.
Before I do anything else in frustration does anyone know what would make an otherwise perfect shifing gear get stuck?
I shall be grateful for any info.

Hi Phil;
You need to put the split pin back in.
If you don't have one go to the local Napa store and pick one up.  size is 8MM Dia. by 19MM long.

Hi Bill:
Thank you for your advice.
The pin actually fell through the opening and is resting in a crevice.
I think a new one is in order. Is it magneic?
However, I think my problem is bigger than that. The short shaft which protrudes from the gearbox is usually moveable and softly clicks in and out when pulled by hand.
As it is now, it does not budge at all, as if it is locked or tighly held by something.
I really hope my problem is the pin which I shall buy 1st thing in the morning.
I am quite baffled and hope a new pin gives me results.
Please let me know if you think otherwise.
