Refinishing Old Window Trim Pieces

Post by leaguewin »

Hi,
I'm actually working on my '87 CRX Si's window trim, and I figure probably nobody on Earth would know more about restoring old Honda window trim than a bunch of 600 folks. (My 2 '72 Z600s are in storage in another state-- I'll be asking for a bunch more guidance when I resurrect them.)
The trim on the CRX is mild steel, with what looks like a vinyl coating that has been completely destroyed by the sun. The trim piece that goes over the door opening was almost completely bare, rusty metal. The other piece goes along the top of the door (where your arm would rest if you were cruizin'). Those came off with a couple of screws. It looks like the fuzzy window gasket and the rubber "wiper" are integral to the metal trim piece. Like they laid the mild steel part in a mold and filled it with rubber.
My plan is to get all the plastic off, sand them down to bare metal, kill the rust, and paint them. Problem is, the "wiper" part that keeps water from running down into your doors will be gone. As far as I know, there aren't parts like that available anywhere, so I'm trying to fix mine up.
Help!

go to your nearest autobody shop for the part, they should be able to get the part easy.
