Carburetor

Post by fredk1026 »

Hey guys, new to the forum. Recently acquired a Z600 and its actually in really good shape.I cannot get it to idle, it runs great at about 3000 RPM. Tore down carburetor twice appears to be all clean, but still now idle. Thought it might be a vacuum leak but I can't find one. Is there any place to get a rebuild kit? Thanks,

Had same kind of problem last week.
Suspected an electrical problem but for some reason focused on fuel supply,
changed fuel pump with same results.
Thought to look at spark plugs (which I should have done first) and behold,
dirty, fouled up plugs that could run above 3000rpm but could not idle.
Check yours out, might be a pleasant surprise.
Phil.

Make sure the feul cut off solenoid on your carb is working. The car will not run at idle without it opening.

Carburetor

Hey guys, thanks for the input, but spark plugs are brand new and fuel solenoid is working properly and so is fuel pump, that's what got me so boggled. As for the Carburetor rebuild kit, I suppose there is very few?

Noone supplies a carburetor kit.  Early Gullwing (75?) kits have gaskets and o-rings that fit.  Search the email archive for exact details.  Did you check the internal carb filter screen?
When checking for a vacumn leak, did you disconnect and plug the hose from the vacumn brake booster?  If that 's ok, wave a propane torch (ulit) around the intake area (engine will run faster) which can pinpoint a leak.

May I also suggest checking your compression. It's easy to do since you can rent a compression tester for free from most parts stores.
My engine also would run at high rpm's, but wouldn't idle very well at all. After taking it apart, I found all four valves were slightly bent from a piece of metal getting inside the combustion chambers.
good luck.

Actually the last post is great advice. And on any car if you have any running issue with it. Because if the compression is low, nothing will make it run right until that is corrected.

Carburetor

I have check the compression and it is 140 psi on both sides. I assume that is acceptable, since the stock compression is 156 psi I hope. Also the internal fuel screen is clear, just a little bent. "Could the coil be giving weak spark?"

Yes,weak spark can do it. I have seen worn distributor plates cause points to close as vac advance pulls on it. Also plug wires or coil could be breaking down. You can get an inline spark tester at harbor freight. I would suspect possible still some stopage in the carburator.Sometimes in these smaller carbs, they gum up from sitting and will clog the tiny passage ways which is the idle circuit. You have to blow air through every oriface and sometimes clean them out with a small wire and cleaner. It would be great if you had access to somebodys 600 carb that was working good, and that nice person would let you try it on your car, or buy another carb, to rebuild and see if it would work. It is always nice to have a few extra parts anyway. There are quite a few things that can cause it, but now you know your engine is sound compression wise.
