Headlight fuse

[danconklin6]

My dad has a 72 Honda sedan that keeps blowing headlight fuse. Can you please give me ideas on how to tackle this problem for him?

Provided the fuse is of correct amperage, it's most likely blowing becuse one of the wires has a bare spot where the insulation is cut or broke and it's grounding against the body.  The first step of troubleshooting is a thorough visual inspection.  I would suggest starting at the headlights and trace the wires back to the switch. Look particualrly close where the wires pass thru holes in the body.  You may notice a small black area on the body where the bare wire has been arking.  Also look closely where the headlight wires come into contact with other wires such as the regulator.

Interesting.  I have the same problem, but I haven't had time to look into it much.  Does it happen as soon as you turn on the headlights?  Mine seems to occur randomly.  Sometimes it will happen 5 minutes into a drive, sometimes 30 minutes, and sometimes not at all.

This sounds like a break in the insulation and the wire is making contact with the body metal.  I would start at each headlight and inspect the wire from the headlight until it reaches the harness.  Pay attention to the areas where the wire is in close proximity to any body metal and where the wiring is able to move freely.

I'm thinking it is something like that.  I haven't had time to trace the wires, but I really need to because I drive my car all the time.  I always have to make sure to be home before dark so I don't get caught w/o lights.  I'll dig around and see if I can't find the culprit.

Hello all,
The fuse did not seem to blow for any apparent reason until the last time, it blew when I stepped on the brake. I checked the wires at the master cylinder and notice that they were real loose and two were probably disconnected. One of the ones disconnected did not have insulation covering the connector. I used a pair of needlenosed pliers to tighten up the connection and plug them back in. I also noticed that the front wiring harness was just laying at the bottom of the engine compartment so I moved it to where I think it goes. One of those two things fixed the problem because the fuse no longer blows. Let us have a poll. Who thinks it was the connections at the master cylinder, and who thinks it was the wiring harness?

I would be suprised if the wires at the master cylinder which are the fluid level indicators have anything to do with the head lights.  So, my vote is for the harness.  Keep in mind that moving the harness may have seemed to resolved your issue. However, if a bare wire was  the actual culprit it's still bare and prone to give you more problems in the future.  Do you have a ledgable schematic?
