starter motor gets jamed when trying to crank the engine. 72 z600

ok i have a problem, i have a 72 z600 the car runs good, starts fine
but the other day i was cranking the engine to start up the motor
after i let the engine warm up. I turn it off to go grab something
got back turn on the car and it wouldnt crank. I keep doing it then i
see smoke coming out of the dashbord. the starter is new btw, rebuild
couple days ago. turn out that the starter gear gets jammed in the
tranny. i try turning the engine over with a wrench, it turns fine.
is my transmission messed up? where would i go about to fix this?

I don't think the starter gets into the tranny at all! It engages
with a ring gear on the alternator rotor/flywheel.
If the engine is free, then the problem is entirely in the starter or
in the wiring.

the starter works fine. it engage when i tap to the battey and diss
engage when is not in contact w/ the battery. is it suppose to spin
too? cause mine engage and spin at the same time, i remember long time
ago i was testing the starter it only engage, or maybe i tap to a
diffrent wire...
i took some pics of the gear, you can see the gear is all warn out.
