Ignition Modifications

Post by Mark »

Hello Kasra
You mentioned electronic ignition.  Of all the simple things that you might do to improve the day to day driveability of your 600 would be to improve the ignition system.  When the Honda was new various electronic ignition kits were available for the majority of the cars to improve the voltage reaching the plugs.    One of the more common setups called the Delta Mark ten Capacitive Discharge Ignition system.  Radio Shack even sold it as a kit.   It used the standard points but instead of going directly to the igniton coil it switched electronics in a finned aluminum box about 3x3x6" that in turn switched the ignition coil.  I have picked these up at swap meets for $10 and less.  For me it allowed more instant starts.  Plugs seemed to last a lot longer.    (More details on request.)
Now that I might have your attention, please let me give you some advice that I have gained over the years.   Don't try to have machinery do things that it was never ment to do unless you are willing to be troubled.  The Honda 600, of all the micro cars, is the hottest one that came that way stock from the factory.  If you think that you are going to improve its performance above stock you are in effect saying that the Honda boys were jerks and did NOT know what they were doing.   Well we know the opposite was the truth.
As a young driver who wants to wrench I suggest you try to bring the car back to like new stock condition with all systems running well.  If you are able to do this you will learn alot and not be stranded beside the road needlessly.

By the way, has anyone ever tried using and electric ignition, if so could you give me an idea on what to use and how to do it? also, what if i run a nos kit. i figure can find a really small fogger and the air temp would be real low, i have been an import fan for a long time an want to try to incorperate the performance tech. of them to the 600 motor. any other suggestion on performance would be awsome. sorry about the bad type i am at school and in a rush.
thanks

Hi
I agree with Wally , mostly, Hondas were top notch for the engine
capacity, they are in effect race engines detuned. For their time
they were amazing and I think they still preform well. The ignition
is a bit poor(by modern standards)
I do believe that modification can be fun and I play with cars cause
they are fun, NOS is at the top of my shopping list or maybe a small
turbo, things that can be removed when you tire of them or sell the
car. Be aware that any modification that adds preformance reduces
engine life to some extent (as long as the added preformance is
used) , you don't get anything for free....... and crankshafts are a
bit rare these days
