An old timer years ago showed me a quick way to check valve timing. He
would rotate the crank until #1 piston was at top dead center. Half the
time it will be on the firing position and other times the exhaust valve is
closing and the intake is starting to open.... If this valve overlap does
not occur at TDC you have found your problem.. Next time you have the
chance check this out. It has saved me lots of work.
