Re: coil
I don't know. My sedan is driving me crazy, I get about 5 mph away from the shift point and the engine begins cutting out and won't pull until I shift, if I let out of the gas a little, it will pull a little more. It isn't as bad in 3rd gear. I've changed point & condensor, fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs, changed timing, valve gap, point gap, cleaned carb and installed kit, new plug wires, changed the gas. Still no change, this is really getting old. engine lacks power, and when it cuts out, it comes on quickly, I think if it was starving for gas it waould be more gradual. My point lobes, have a little side to side play, and my centrifugal weight pins have some play in them. Any ideas?

Re: coil
Hi Greg;
Do one more thing for me. Pull the points breaker plate, now holding the plate with the points in one hand and the lower dark blue or black plate in the other (not apart) and turn them back and forth, I ask the question "Are they free to turn either way?"
Now don't let go yet, move them back and forth, not turning, just from side to side. I ask the Question "Are they moving, if they are moving back and forth, then the breaker plate is the fault. If they two plates don't turn freely, they might also be to tight for the vacuum advance to move the plate. Look to see if one of the Screws is to long. If one is, just add a couple of washers and screw it back down.
Do you get my drift?
Bill

How strange. My 72 sedan has been doing the same thng ever since I got it! I
just figured it was made to do that, and I compensate by shifting early.
Seems to work ok for me!
Now I have something to look for.....
Thanks!

Re: coil
Bill,
The plates didn't turn real free, so I cleaned it and got them free. Still have the same problem. There was no side to side slop. I put my hand vacuum pump on the vac line and breaker plate moved. Any other ideas?

Re: coil
You also want to check the springs which connect to the weights on the
breaker plate. The ignition advance at low rpm is being controlled by engine
vacuum. At higher rpm, the advance is being controlled by the mechanical
system consisting of the weight and springs. The 600 engines are air cooled
and get a lot of heat in the area of the cylinder heads which the breaker
plate is near. After many hours of use, the springs will be tempered by the
heat and their spring constant will be altered. As a result, the springs
let the weights advance the ignition too early and all the advance is
happening within the lower rpm range causing power loss at the top end.
Try replacing the springs. Or you can create a plot of igniton advance vs.
rpm and check it against the an600 shop manual advance curves.
good luck,
Dale
