600 Experts: Need help registering as "Historic Vehicle" in CA

Post by Pawzi »

i would like to register my 1971 AN600 as a Historic Vehicle in Ca.
i realize it may limit the usage of the car...
but it's a 600 not a commuter Civic.
plus i think they all deserve the recognition in history as a
landmark vehicle for not only Honda but for the entire modern day FF
industry.
so here's what i need (cold hard facts are best):
sales figures;
- info on # of 600's sold total in USA (69-72)
- # of AN600's sold in CA in 1972
- link to any resources or articles noting the historic value of our
little 2-cyl mama's.
any other info you feel may be needed to accomplish the task.
basically i need to prove to CA DMV that it is worthy to issue the
plates to a 1971 Honda 600 Sedan.
also, has anyone (or know of anyone who) even reg their 600 as a
Historic Vehicle in CA?
anyone know if there is any drawbacks to having these plates issued?
is insurance affected? (my current carrier will only give me comp
coverage for the 600 anyway)
thanks for all the help!

Hi Aaron;
This is the URL for the state of California Historical Vehicle law
and the requirements. Justification of historical value has to be
stated in several collector magazines, note worthy comments on the
vehicle and its collectablility. Recently there were some situations
that have resulted in listing the Honda 600 Coupe as one of the Top
Five Future Collectable vehicles by Hemmings Motor News. Old Car
News and Market Place has recognized both the Coupe and Sedan as
collectable cars by listing them in their Price Guide. N.A.D.A
(National Automobile Dealers Association) is also listing them in
their collectable guide and the Honda 600 has been referred to as the
Isseta of the 70's. How many have been built; the Sedan and Coupe
were manufactured for each country separately and documented as such
by the Engine Number. What this tells you is how many Honda 600
Sedans were made for the Americas, North, Central and South.
Registered new car sales for the USA amounted to roughly 35,000
Sedans. The Coupes had totaled a bit more than 15,000.
You can also write a letter to the AACA or CCCA and ask for a listing
in their organization. Remember, the Honda 600 is a Collectable
Special Interest Vehicle, not a Classic or Antique.

Good Luck and keep us posted on your progress.
Also, talk to your State Farm insurance agent, I have collectable
insurance on one of mine with a stated value of over 10K.

Please could you give me the email or postal address of AACA & CCCA. I would
like to find out more about my Honda and its Collectable or Historical
value.
