You might consider a 998 or 1098 from an Austin Mini. A lot of folks have
upgraded to 1275, so there ought to be some around. I have no clue if it'll
fit, or if it is really an upgrade, but it's a place to start looking.

What about using a Geo Metro 3 cyl motor? Just from the look's of the car that might fit in the Honda. You will still have to do alot of modifications to get it to work, but look at the bright side you could get AC out of it!
